General Description of Position:

Leads the design and maintenance of Hargray Communications’ network infrastructure using the latest technologies, develops internal processes for the deployment of these technologies, while providing leadership to our technical staff. Works in a team environment to develop and manage our Voice, Video, Data Network and internet services focusing on reliability, performance and security. Management of annual capital and operating budgets and assures fiscal responsibility and accountability. Oversees the design, evolution and optimization of the Hargray network. Identify opportunities to position Hargray as the carrier of choice through network evolution. Continually evaluate Hargray’s network to identify opportunities for improvement and enhance customer experience. Strategic planning of network evolution with regards to MPLS, SDN and other networking technologies. Keen focus on network performance and staff performance leading to the highest quality customer experience. Build, identify, develop and motivate a best in class, high caliber, team-oriented engineering organization that promotes excellence, rewards results and has a true sense urgency.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates the ability to manage complicated technical projects including time-lines, costs, resources and vendor relationships.
  • Provides advanced technical and operational escalation support to the Operations staff on network elements, internal processes, training requirements, vendor support, and network design and planning.
  • Provides senior-level project management and capital management duties.
  • Manages vendor relations and product evaluations, provides costs analysis and feasibility studies for various projects and proposed network designs.
  • Identifies operational and design issues through data analysis and recommends solutions to make networks more efficient.
  • Monitors network performance and performs capacity planning to ensure optimal performance of network resources.
  • Works with our internal technical, sales and support groups to provide a reliable and secure network infrastructure used to deliver telecommunications services including voice, video and high speed data.
  • Supports carrier network equipment such as routers, switches, DSLAMs, CMTS, GPON, Metro-E, UNIX systems, firewalls and other data/IP networking-related equipment.
  • Applies strong knowledge of data communications principles, architectures and protocols including TCP/IP, routing, switching, WAN and Ethernet technologies to design and implement efficient network configurations.
  • Researches emerging technologies as a member of a task force or independently and makes appropriate recommendations to improve network performance, security and reliability.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure effective operation of department.


Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 10 to 15 years’ experience in network design with a direct leadership role in a Network Engineering environment
  • 8 - 10 years of IP Network design experience in a voice, video, and data service provider environment
  • Working knowledge and experience in layer 3 routing protocols : RIPv2, OSPF or IS-IS, and BGP
  • Specific knowledge of Juniper and Cisco routers, especially the Juniper MX, EX, and SRX platforms is preferred
  • Broad knowledge of Juniper and Cisco configurations
  • Advanced Knowledge of TCP/IP, Ethernet technologies, IP routing and routing protocols, multicast, Unix/Linux systems, network security technologies and carrier network architectures
  • Design and Operational knowledge of IP and RF video distribution architectures
  • Design and Operational knowledge of SIP based Voice architectures
  • Knowledge of telecom standards such as MEF, DOCSIS, ADSL, GPON, DSL Forum
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks/projects as well as leading departmental initiatives

Additional Qualifications Desired:

  • CCIE, JNCIE and/or Alcatel-Lucent SRA certifications or equivalent experience
  • Working knowledge of ISP architectures to include load balancers and email systems
  • Working knowledge of SIP, MGCP or H.323 VoIP protocols
